Services for Lavonne Hinkson, 100, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 20, 2015, in the Abernathy First United Methodist Church with Rev. Janet Edwards and Jim Cooper officiating. Graveside services will be held at 5:00 pm Tuesday, in the Lazbuddie Cemetery, Lazbuddie, TX, under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. The family will gather to receive friends at Abell Funeral Home Monday evening from 8:30 pm until 9:30 pm.
Mrs. Hinkson died Friday, October 16, 2015, in Lubbock, TX.
She was born December 10, 1914 in Grand Island, NE to Earl and Nettie (Ball) Mecham. She married Frank Harold Hinkson on December 28, 1933 in Hall County, NE. Frank and Lavonne moved to the Lazbuddie community in Parmer County from Cairo, NE in December of 1934. The Hinkson's drilled the first irrigation well in Parmer County in 1936 and were pioneers in the cattle feeding industry. In the early days they also fed lambs. Later they started a registered Angus herd, which is still producing outstanding cattle.
During the early years Lavonne worked in the fields alongside Frank. She gardened, canned, sewed and did what ever it took to keep the home running smoothly, many times under very adverse conditions. She was active in Home Demonstration Club, is a Past Matron of Eastern Star and helped with many school and church activities.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Hinkson, on December 25, 2002, 2 brothers, Marion Mecham and Paul Mecham and 2 sisters, Florence Hinkson and Lucille Lade.
She is survived by her 4 children, Barbara Lust and husband Glenn of Abernathy, Carolyn Pilgrim and husband Charles of Cottonwood Falls, KS, Mike Hinkson and wife Melinda of Matfield Green, KS and Frank Hinkson, II and wife Marilyn of Emporia, KS, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, a sister, Carol Sundstrom of Edina, MO, a brother-in-law, Keith Hinkson of Grand Island, NE and 2 sisters-in-law Helen Larson of Grand Island and Miriam Mecham of Billings, MT
