Obituary of Vertie Stambaugh

Services for Vertie Pool Stambaugh, 96, of Abernathy, TX, were held at 2:00 pm Friday, July 30, 2004, in the Nazarene Church, Abernathy, with the Reverend John Lowrie officiating. Burial followed in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy. Mrs. Stambaugh died Monday, July 26, 2004, in Lubbock, TX. She was a long time resident of the South Plains area, having arrived in Hale Center with her parents, George F. and Mattie Pool, her three sisters Emma, Beth and twin Verna, and one brother Truett, when she was 15 months old, from Jones Prairie in South Texas. She was born there on August 24, 1907. She graduated from Plainview High School and attended Texas Tech in its opening year, after which she taught school for one year in the Cotton Center area. She married Chester S. Stambaugh in Hale Center on August 28, 1928. He preceded her in death on September 22, 1957. They had two sons, George Ellison, who preceded her in death in 1969, and Patrick, who currently resides in Los Angeles, California. She worked for many years at Dunlap's Department Store in downtown Lubbock as post mistress, and retired from there in 1970. She was a charter member of the Cotton Center First Baptist Church. She has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Abernathy since 1957. Survivors include one son, Patrick, of Los Angeles, CA; daughter-in-law Ricki Stambaugh, widow of Ellison, and one granddaughter, Susan, both of Burbank, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved very much. The family would like to express their appreciation to the Nazarene Church for their hospitatility and the use of their facilities while First Baptist Church is undergoing remodeling.
