Funeral services for Ray Charles Shorter, 45, of Abernathy were held at 2:00 pm Saturday, September 15, 2001, in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Thomas officiating. Burial followed services in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy. Mr. Shorter died Monday, September 10, 2001 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Tx. He was born on August 2, 1956, in Marlin, Tx. to E. D. Shorter and Jewel Gude. He graduated from Marlin High School and attended South Plains College and Commercial Business College. He married Barbara Blakes on November 26, 1988 in Abernathy, Tx. He was employed by Texas Instruments, Lubbock State School for 16 years, Lubbock Regional MHMR for 9 years and Bethphage. He moved to Abernathy in 1988 from Lubbock. He loved playing baseball, basketball, softball and football, and enjoyed coaching his 2 sons and other children. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers; Allen and Jeffrey Gude. He is survived by his wife; Barbara Shorter of Abernathy, Tx. 2 sons; Christopher Charles Shorter and Matthew Charles Shorter both of Abernathy, Tx. Mother and Stepdad; Jewel & Darnell Gude of Marlin, Tx. Father and Stepmom; E. D. & Peggy Shorter of Petersburg, Tx. 7 Sisters; Brenda Polk, Ida People and Laverne Thomas all of Marlin, Tx., Unice Gude and Tonji Shorter both of Denver, Colo., Terry Shorter of Petersburg, Tx., and Ruth Ann Boyd of Lubbock, Tx. 4 Brothers; Rev. Billy Gude of Ft. Worth, Tx., Rev. Marion Gude and Antonio Gude both of Marlin, Tx., and Carl Gude of Houston, Tx. Grandfather; Porter Haynes of Houston, Tx.
