Memorial services for Wilbur Thomas Leon, 77, of Petersburg, TX, were at 11:00 am Tuesday, July 22, 2008, in the First United Methodist Church in Petersburg with Rev. Lee Crouch officiating and John Blythe assisting.
Burial was held prior to the memorial services in the Petersburg Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy, TX.
He died Saturday, July 19, 2008 in his home. He was born July 23, 1930 in Rule, TX. He graduated from Lubbock Hgih School in 1947 and Texas Technological College in 1950 with a degree in Management.
He married Mary Settle on August 9, 1949 in Lubbock,TX. He was an innovative farmer and entrepreneur, an avid reader, and loved to play golf and poker. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Petersburg, where he taught Sunday School and served in numerous leadership capacities. He was a strong community leader, serving on the city council for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary and daughter Anne.
Survivors include daughters and their spouses; Paula and Larry Martin of Petersburg, TX, Kathy and Dickie Vanderpool of Wolfforth, TX, Janet and Danny Shuffield of Austin, TX; sons and their spouses; Tommy Leon and Don Glover of Salem, MA and Carroll and Cherise Leon of Petersburg, TX; grandchildren, Brent Martin and wife Erin, Kyle Martin, Rodney and Kristen Leon, Travis, Andrew and Kurtis Vanderpool, Luke, Anne Elise, Daniel and Seth Shuffield; great granddaughters Cash and Cooper Martin; sisters, Barbara Scheef and Linda Zachary.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church, 1706 Ave. G, Petersburg, TX 79250 or to the Petersburg Library, 1614 Main Street, Petersburg, TX 79250.
