Services for Merle Enger, 90, of Abernathy, TX, were held at 2:00 pm Friday, December 9, 2011, in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Brownlow and Rev. Janet Edwards officiating. Burial followed in Resthaven Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. The family received friends at Abell Funeral Home Thursday, December 8, 2011, from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm. Mrs. Enger died Tuesday, December 6, 2011, in Lubbock, TX. She was born June 16, 1921 in Knox City, TX to Ollie and Edith (Dutton) Howard. She graduated from Robertson High School in 1937 as Class Valedictorian. She married Clayton Enger on June 25, 1938 in Robertson, TX. She was the pianist at Lakeview Methodist Church until moving into Abernathy when she became member of First United Methodist Church where she and her husband became members of the choir. She was a longtime supporter and member of Farm Bureau and was charter member of the Abernathy Senior Citizens and board member. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton in 2002, a grandson, Greg Gist in 2005 and a brother, Durwood "Bud" Howard. She is survived by a son, Don Enger and his wife Ruth of Shallowater, TX, 2 daughters, Beth Smith and husband Ken of Abernathy, TX and Sue Rhodes and husband Bud of Wimberly, TX, 5 grandchildren, Cherise Leon, Clay Enger, Camie Holcombe, Jeff Rhodes and Trey Rhodes, 7 great grandchildren, Rodney Leon, Kristen Leon, Averie and Katie Holcombe, Annika Enger, Samantha and Charlotte Rhodes and 1 great great granddaughter to be born in January of 2012 that "MawMaw" was very excited about. The family suggests memorials be sent to Meals on Wheels or First United Methodist Church at 704, Ave. D, Abernathy, TX 79311. Abell Funeral Home
