Rosary for Johnny Ponce, 77, of Abernathy, TX, will be recited at 6:00 pm, Monday, June 10, 2024, at St. Isidore Catholic Church with Rev. Brian Wood officiating. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am Tuesday in St. Isidore Catholic Church, with Rev. Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy. Abell Funeral Home will be open to the public from 12:00pm until 5:00pm, Monday, for anyone wanting to pay their respects. Johnny died Wednesday, June 5, 2024, in Lubbock, TX. He was born December 7, 1946 in Edinburg, TX to Juan T. and Victoria (Partida) Ponce. Johnny moved with his family to Abernathy from Edinburg at age 6. He attended Abernathy Schools. Johnny married Hilda Garza, April 2, 1966 in Abernathy. He was employed as parts salesman, later manager, at Fenner Tubbs Chrysler and Frontier Dodge for over 40 years. Johnny was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church for 58 years holding various positions and servicing on many committees and councils, with his favorite being a CYO Sponsor. Johnny was an avid sports fan. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Tech Red Raiders, the Flyers Ice Hockey Team and Abernathy Antelope Athletics. He loved watching wrestling. Johnny helped take care of his family and friends throughout his life, and always put others first. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Ponce and a sister Estella Ponce. Johnny is survived by his wife, Hilda Ponce of Abernathy, 3 children, Patrick Ponce and wife Aimee of Amarillo, TX, Rhetta Salinas and husband Gilbert of Euless, TX and Crystal Cortez and husband Charles of Abernathy, 5 grandchildren, Nikkolas Salinas and wife Christine, Monika Medina and husband Adrian, Carlos Ponce, Aaron Cortez and wife Kendall and Micah Cortez, 5 great grandchildren, Ava Salinas, Carolina Villarreal, Fabian Medina, Elena Medina and Amina Salinas, a sister Sylvia Trapp and husband David of Sumter, SC and a brother, Ruben Ponce and wife Rita of Abernathy. The family suggests memorials be sent to St. Isidore Catholic Church, 17813 IH 27, Abernathy, TX 79311.
