I just wanna share some memories I have of my dad. These are in no certain order.
When my son was born my dad was in a chair holding him and he asked what was his name. And I said Logan Thomas Conway. He looked at me with a look on his face that I cant describe and I said yes daddy he has your name(Thomas).
When I was in high school I was raising turkeys for the Houston livestock show. We had a turkey coop in our backyard and one night it was raining. Well he came to my room and woke me up telling me that the turkeys were looking up at the rain and they were gonna drown. He said that I needed to go outside and keep their heads down. So i did it only look back at the backdoor and see him laughing.
When I got married he was my best man. So we are standing side by side and before my wife to be comes out he leans over and ask me if I was sure about this. Well i looked at him and smiled and said of course. And right then she came out and he whispers well its to late now. I still laugh at that memory.
When my uncle Bill passed me and my dad were standing side by side while they were folding our nations colors. My dad whispers to me...are they folding it correctly? I told him yes and we both popped a salute at the same time. RIP uncle Bill.
My first duty station was Bergstrom AFB in Austin TX. My momma and daddy came to visit for the first time. we were gonna go off base and get something to eat. When we were about to leave the barracks my dad looked at me and asked me if I was gonna put on my suit. I was dumbfounded. I had no idea or clue what he was asking me. He then said that when he was in the Army that he would have to dress up to get off base and i had to explain that times had changed.
He was a 6' tall man and weighed over 200lbs and he drove a pinto! let that set in!
My dad would take me and my brother fishing out at Buffalo Springs Lake. We never caught anything not even a nibble. It was just him wanting to spend time with his boys. One time we stopped at a place he knew that sold great burritos. He buys all 3 of us the burritos and tells me and my brother to not say a word to momma cuz she would be bring food later that night so pretend to be hungry.
When i was married we bought a house in Mansfield TX. My momma and daddy came down to help us kind of get things put together. Me and daddy were in the front room putting together a ceiling fan. If youre looking at the directions you would follow them by going from A-Z. I had finished A and B. But my dad was on Z! I asked him what had happened and he said nothing that he is helping. I asked well what happened to C-Z? He said that he didnt know so we laughed and took Z apart.
He loved playing the video game Qbert.
He taught me how to shave my chin. And if you look at his you will know why.
We always knew when he was emotional because of the way his chin would quiver.
When i was in junior high school i got in trouble and a teacher called the house. Momma said for me to get to my room and to wait until your daddy gets home. THAT means one thing. So as i sat there thinking about what was coming I had an outstanding idea. That idea was to put on EVERY PAIR of underwear i had. And it worked!! I didnt feel a thing. but i made myself cry so it was believable. Years and years go by and the whole family is out eating and I said to him that i had something to tell him. I told him that i had finally gotten one over on him. I told him what i had done and he looked at me and said that it was never to late!!! And we laughed.
When daddy drove for Frito Lay he pulled up in front of the house and called us all out front. Well he opened up the side door of the trailer and out walks a goat! I didnt have to mow the backyard for years.
These are just some of my memories of a very very special man and dad. God broke the mold when he made my dad. There will never be another man like him. I wish i could be half the man he was. So whoever reads this i hope you get a chuckle or a tear. I love you daddy and so does my momma and brother and sister. Until we are together again. Thank you for teaching me manners and respect. You will forever be loved and missed. I love you daddy.
