Sincere condolences to your family. I am so very sorry for your loss. May God provide the necessary peace and comfort to your family and friends during this difficult time. Please remember these words of encouragement from the Bible: “ Jesus plainly told her: “I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.” —John 11:20-25.

About Charles Pope….’Charlie’ to me.
Although I am his uncle, I’m only about a year older than he, and when Charles was less than 10 years old, we spent a great deal of time playing together. Charles, Milt, and I were big on ‘Play Like’, that is ‘Playing Like’ we were the Hopalong Cassidy or Gene Autrey or Charles’s favorite, “The Lone Ranger”. Know also, that Hopalong was my favorite. And, I distinctly remember that I arrived late to the game of ‘Play Like’ when Charles had taken on my favorite cowboy persona, ole Hopalong himself! Then, to top that he was playing like Hopalong was robbing a bank!! Ole Hopalong robbing a bank…NO WAY!! Sometime Charlie was just a half-step out of the box!!!
But that was Charles, Milt, and I before 1950. All that comradery kind of came to a close when my family moved away from Abernathy in 1949.
So, in remembering Charles, one would have to say he was a ‘free spirit’….a fun loving guy who was a friend to all he met. With that being said, what really sticks in my mind is his love for his 1957 Chevy two-door hardtop. That car probably began his love for drag racing…..and he was known for doing a lot of that!!!
I have been told that in our lives we will meet a lot of people, but only a few ‘characters’. Charles definitely qualifies as a ‘character’, and perhaps the only one who was also part of my family! Ya gotta love those of us who create memories like Charles did and perhaps even have just a touch of envy for him being such a free spirit.
And for his family, please know that he will be missed by not only you, but all those who were a close part of his adventurous life. We will all have special memories of him. May he rest in peace.

Charles was one of a kind and he will be missed. He helped me early in my drag racing days.
