Obituary of August Leon Collier

Memorial services for August Leon Collier, 91, of Lubbock, TX will be held 10:30 am Friday, February 4, 2022 at Highland Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX, with Rev. John Jeffrey Officiating. Cremation and services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mr. Collier died Wednesday, December 15, 2021, in Lubbock, TX. He was born August 26, 1930 in Chandler, OK to John and Pearl Marie (Gough) Collier. He was the youngest child of migrant workers, residing in Arkansas, California and wherever the crops led the family. While working in Wichita, KS for Bond Bakery, August met and married the love of his life, Vera Roten on December 6, 1958. He then worked for George C. Christopher & Sons Steelworks before moving to Lubbock in 1974. August worked as a Produce Manager with Cash N' Carry, an independent produce distributor, and then worked at Furr's Grocery and Lowe's Grocery. He was always independent, continuing to live in his home until his death. August is preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Vera Collier, August 7, 2015, as well as all of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his 4 children, Anna Murphy and husband Dale of Hulbert, OK, Teresa Derler and husband Andy, Sandra Griggs and husband John, all of Lubbock and Scott Collier and wife Jessica of Winnsboro, SC, 5 grandchildren, Christopher Derler, Shaun Derler, Shane Murphy, Josh Murphy and Paul Sturm, and 3 great grandchildren, Freya Derler, Gunner and Avery Murphy, numerous nieces and nephews.
