Obituary of Carmen Quiñonez

Rosary for Carmen Quiñonez, 84, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in New Deal, TX, with Rev. Brian Wood officiating. Family will gather to receive friends Thursday, November 4, 2021, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM at Abell Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 pm Friday, November 5, 2021, in the same church with the same officiant. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy. Mrs. Quiñonez died at her home in Abernathy, Saturday, October 30, 2021. She was born December 21, 1936 in Musquiz, Coahuila, Mexico to Feliciano and Estefana (Mendez) Marquez. The family moved to the United States when Carmen was 5 years old, and grew up at Eagle Pass. As migrant workers, the family eventually settled in the Lubbock area where Carmen attended Lubbock Cooper Schools. She was a strong believer of education. She supported her children and grandchildren's educational endeavors, both academic and extracurricular. The Quiñonez household was filled with books. Her philosophy was "an education opens doors to endless opportunities". Because of these values, her children pursued higher education and earned college degrees. She married Aureliano Quiñonez in March of 1957 in Lubbock, TX. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She and her husband Aureliano, instilled the values of faith, hard work, and determination. Carmen was known for being a caregiver for family and friends. She loved to read, gardening, and watched many hours of the Hallmark Channel on TV. She was a woman of quiet strength and strong religious beliefs. She was a devoted member of Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church. A daughter, Sylvia Quiñonez, husband Aureliano Quiñonez, and 3 brothers, preceded her in death. Carmen is survived by 3 sons, Pablo Quiñonez, Anthony Quiñonez and wife Maria all of Abernathy, and David Quiñonez and wife Angela of Katy, TX, 2 daughters, Graciela Quiñonez and Rita Prieto and husband Manuel all of Abernathy, and 2 grandchildren, Marco Quiñonez and Kori Vecchio. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to South Plains College Scholarship Fund, c/o Shalyn Slape, 1401 S. College Ave., Levelland, TX 79336.
