Obituary of Jean Benton Heck

Please share a memory of Jean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Nelma Jean Benton Heck, 95, went home to her Lord and Savior on November 30, 2020. Jean was born Girard, TX on March 9, 1925 to Emmitt and Laura (Gilbert) Hollingshead and later moved to Potosi, TX. Jean was the middle child of 9. Having grown up during the depression, Jean was resourceful, frugal, creative and developed a strong sense of family. In Abilene Texas on February 25, 1949, she married Carroll Wilson (C.W.) Benton who was the love of her life. They had two children, Jack and Laura. Jean was a homemaker, loved to cook and worked for Abilene Casket Company designing and installing interior panels. C.W. died on November 6, 1970. Jean later married George Heck on July 22, 1976 and they traveled extensively before his passing on October 11, 1997. Jean had a servant’s heart, was very active at the Second Baptist Church in Abilene, TX, and also volunteered at the Food Bank, Senior Citizens and was involved in Prison Ministries, always putting others before herself. She loved the Lord and reading the Bible and always said that “the Bible is the only book you will ever need.” In 2002, she moved to Lubbock to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her parents Emmitt and Laura Hollingshead and brothers Clyde, Floyd, and Henry Orville Hollingshead and sisters Mae Webb, Iwanda King, Nina Hollingshead and Billie Hollingshead and a step-son Joe Benton. She is survived by her son Jack Benton and wife Mary of Lubbock and a daughter Laura Bradley and her husband Larry of Levelland; grandchildren Cindy Adams and husband Chris, Jon Benton and Grace Myers, Jim Bradley, Shawn Bradley and wife Dana, and Matt Bradley and Kaycee Womack, Teresa Benton and Tammy Brewer; great grandchildren Ashley Hendershot and husband Kane, Freddie Reyna, Alyssa Reyna & Josh Shaw, Payton Adams, Addison Adams, Molly Benton, Keaton Bradley and Korbin Bradley. She is also survived by her sister Exa Ballard and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Her family and friends will treasure memories of Jean; our Mom, Grandma and GiGi. Visitation for family and friends will be at Abell Funeral Home in Abernathy from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2020.
