Obituary of James R. Martin

Graveside services for James R. "Slim" Martin, 77, of Lubbock, TX, will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday October 24, 2020, in the Petersburg Cemetery with Rev. Susan Felty officiating. A memorial service will follow the graveside at Canyon United Methodist Church 217 FM 1729, Lubbock, TX. The family will gather to receive friends at Abell Funeral Home, Abernathy, from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm, Friday, October 23, 2020. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mr. Martin died at his home Sunday, October 18, 2020. He was born April 13, 1943 in Plainview, TX to J.W. & Agnes Bernice (Anderson) Martin. James grew up around Petersburg and Kress. He served in the United States Navy in the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968. After serving in the military, James worked in multiple CO-OPs in Petersburg, Lorenzo and Levelland. He then began working in the oil field for various companies, where he retired after 36 years. James was an active member of VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Fayra Martin, sister Darla, and a granddaughter Kassandra Marie. James is survived by partner Sherry & family of Lubbock, TX, 4 children Billy of Lubbock, James Allen of Ransom Canyon, TX, Tim of Stockdale, TX, and Kimberly of Seguin, TX, 13 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren, 3 Great Great Grandchildren, brothers Orville Martin and Jack Martin both of Petersburg, Bennie Martin of Dickens, TX and Lynn Martin of Bowie, TX, and sisters Jerry Ferguson of Monroe, LA and Jeannie Abbe of Ardmore, OK. Due to current events, if you would like to bring your own lawn chair, the Martin family encourages those attending graveside services to do so.
