Memorial services for Troy Wayne Wells, 55, of Hale Center, TX, will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Abell Funeral Home in Abernathy with Rev. Bruce McBee officiating. Cremation and services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Troy died Tuesday, September 15, 2020, in Plainview, TX. He was born March 29, 1965 in Morton, TX, to Troy Gid and Wanda Merle (Brady) Wells. He was raised outside of Morton, TX until he and his mother moved to Abernathy following the death of his father in 1979. Troy has always had a love of music and by the time he was 8 years old he was playing the banjo, mandolin and guitar. With his natural talent and love for music, Troy was soon able to play anything with strings. Troy moved to Oklahoma where, at a young age, he won a banjo contest at nearby Cement, OK. While in Oklahoma, he continued playing his music with local bands and was a member of a band that won 1st place at an annual Blue Grass Festival in Hugo, OK. Troy played many types of music, from blues, jazz, bluegrass, country and flamenco. He played all over the United States and Internationally. Troy also performed in and around the Dallas area, Red River, NM, Branson, MO and later years in Lubbock, TX with numerous well-known artists and bands. Troy loved fishing and hiking in Red River, where he also was a part-time dirt bike trail guide and worked part time at the ski shop. His heart always belonged to Red River. Troy was preceded in death by his father, Troy Gid Wells in 1979, sister, Erlene Wells in 1965 and his step-father, Solon Wilkins in 2018. He is survived by his mother, Wanda Wilkins of Abernathy, 2 sisters, Debbie Dennington and husband Rick of Lakeview, AR and Diane Floyd and husband Dwight of Smyer, TX, and 2 nephews, Shane Floyd of Lubbock and Chey Floyd of Smyer. The family suggests memorials be sent to the County Line Baptist Church, c/o Randle Moore, P. O. Box 733, Shallowater, TX 79363.
