Obituary of Wanda Bishop Phipps

Please share a memory of Wanda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Services for Wanda Bishop Phipps will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, August 11, 2018, in the Abernathy Methodist Church with Rev. Janet Edwards and Ty Lust officiating.  Burial will follow in the Littlefield Memorial Park under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX.  The family will gather at the home of Janet Edwards from 6:00 pm until 8:00pm Friday  to receive friends.

Wanda Lucille Bishop Phipps was born to J.D. and Flora Baker on March 12, 1930 in Littlefield, TX. She graduated high school in Littlefield in 1947. She married Stanley Bishop on December 28, 1946. She and Stanley farmed in Littlefield until 1957 at which time they moved to Friona.  They continued to farm until 1980. She could always be found in the kitchen where she was preparing meals for everyone. She loved having company and she and Stanley hosted many hunters so the table was always full of guests. She loved trying new dishes and her kitchen was filled with every kind of cookbook you can imagine.

Stanley passed away in 1980, leaving a big void in her life.  God would bless her again by bringing Virgil Phipps into her life. She and Virgil were married on September 25, 1981. They lived in Friona most of their married life until Virgil’s illness brought them to Abernathy. They lived in Savannah Park Apartments and she loved it there. She had the apartment across from the office where she could see everything that was going on. She continued her love for cooking and saved her family many times when they needed a dessert. The church was blessed by all the strawberry, banana and zucchini bread she made for the Sunday breakfasts.  As Wanda’s health declined, she had to leave her Savanah Park family and moved to Brookdale Remington Assisted Living in November of 2017.  There she found many new friends in the residents and the loving staff. She passed way peacefully on August 6, 2018 surrounded by her family.

She was preceeded in death by her husband Stanley in 1980, her husband Virgil in 2012, her son-in-law Tommy Edwards in 2009, a nephew Cecil Baker, who was like her son, her parents, four sisters and a brother.

She is survived by her daughter Janet Edwards of Abernathy, TX, son Charlie Bishop and wife Alane of Amherst, TX, three stepsons, Monte Phipps and wife Shawnda of Waco,TX,  Michael Phipps and wife Lynn of Lubbock, TX,  Mark Phipps of Grand Junction, CO, and stepdaughter, Marlana Phipps of Grand Junction, CO and a sister, Alta Kirby of Littlefield, TX.   Fifteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

The family suggests memorials be sent to the Abernathy Methodist Church, 704 Ave. D, Abernathy, TX 79311.
