For years now I have heard about Alvine Cannon from Raylene. She talked about how much her grandmother meant to her, told stories about how close they were and about how Raylene love to take her flowers. I hope when it is my time to transition to the next life I have people talk about me like they talk about Mrs. Cannon. Her influence will last forever!
Love you!
Susan

My grandmother was a woman of steel with a heart of gold. I am so honored to have known her and to have heard her stories. She witnessed the great depression, but what she remembers is she was grateful to live on a farm where they had food to eat. When she lost her home to a tornado (twice), she would take a breath and build another place to live. When my grandfather was a prisoner of war for 9 months in World War II, she refused to believe that he was dead and kept waiting for him, despite others’ urgings. When rheumatoid arthritis afflicted her so greatly that she couldn’t use her hands after having my mother, she pinned my mother’s diapers on with her teeth. My mother remembers how she would handle the pain: she would get out into the garden and hoe.
As a child, I mused that we didn’t play “games” at my grandmother’s house. She taught us to sew clothes for our dolls (and later helped me to make pajamas and pillows for my boyfriend, now husband), encouraged us to climb trees to take off mistletoe, and would give us a quarter for every coffee can of bag worms we picked. Her house was always warm and inviting. I remember the garage door open, coffee in the pot, and something freshly baked for the visitors that would stop by.
She gave us very few verbal instructions: mostly to get a good education and to help our mother, but she taught by example. She had known the challenges (and sometimes hardness) of life, and she was able to survive and thrive. She is the most resilient person I have ever known.
I remember when I told her I was pregnant with my son. She said, “you want to bring a child into this old world?” When he arrived though, he was showered with her love and affection. He would sit in her lap, lay next to her in bed, and she called him her laughing cowboy.
I feel blessed to have grown in the sheltering shadow of such a great woman. I believe that all who knew her feel the same. I, and I think many who knew and loved her, want to be stronger because of her example. I also remember hearing how my mother dealt with being stung by a scorpion after crushing her ankle in a car accident: just like my grandmother in the garden, she took a hoe to the pile of wood in the yard.
Life is not always easy or fun, but my grandmother showed us we can make it through. She was a woman who handled the hard times, moved forward unfailingly, and was loving and devoted to her family. Thank you, Granny.

Alvine Cannon, known to me as Granny: This amazing woman taught me how to cook, without measuring cups & spoons but with how the mix looked & tasted. She never went to high school or college and made a living as a hair dresser--one of the best. She taught herself how to sew, design clothes, paint --everything she wanted to do.
Granny was a FABULOUS clothes designer -- and I constantly wore the clothes she made while growing up. She even made clothes for my little dog while I was in College. I remember one time, mom brought her over for decorating Easter Eggs, and while the kids were busy turning their eggs pink and blue, I looked over and my grandmother was busy at work with a pencil -- It wasn't too long before her egg had a house, a barn, a windmill -- just the most beautiful country scene...many members of our family have at least one of her paintings and one of her hand made dolls in our home.
Growing up, I was often told that I took most after my grandmother. She was one tough woman, and I was glad because I thought she was so strong and self-sufficient, there was no one on earth I would rather be like. She told me with confidence, there was always more than one way to solve a problem and if you wanted something done, you could make it happen. Granny taught me how to "think outside of the box."
My grandfather, Billy Cannon, and grandmother were school sweethearts. He was a POW in a German Concentration Camp and I can not even begin to imagine how hard it must have been for her to not have known for months if he were alive or dead. He was a man filled with integrity, honor, high morals and love who constantly put others needs first. I knew growing up, I wanted to find a man to marry that had a heart as big as my grandfather with the love that he and my grandmother shared. He died way too soon in the 1980's at the age of 64, and I know that my grandmother missed him terribly.
I will deeply miss my grandmother, and I am sad she is not with us on earth anymore, but more than anything, I am so very, very happy for her. The last few years, she could no longer walk. She lost her vision and could not do the things she loved. She was still able to live at home, but she could no longer be self sufficient--and that was so very important to her.
I believe with all my heart that she is now with her husband, that she has everything back that she lost on Earth, that she is with God, her friends & family. I know she is truly the happiest she has ever been.
She was 98 years old when she passed.
---Thank you Granny for showing me how to be successful and how to live. I love you.
—-Becky
