Services for Joe Stokes, 76, of Hale Center, TX were held 2:00 pm Saturday, October 1, 2005 at the Garland Street Church of Christ in Plainview, TX with Silas Short officiating. Burial followed in the Hale Center Cemetery under the direction of Freeman-Abell Funeral Home of Hale Center, TX.. Mr. Stokes died September 29, 2005 in Hale Center. He was born March 8, 1929 in O'Donnell, Texas. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas A&M in 1950. He married Barbara Laney on January 13, 1951 in Hale Center. He served in U.S. Army during the Korean War. He lived in Hale Center over 50 years and was an area farmer. He served on the Hale Center Co-Op Board and Great Plains Ag Credit Board. He served for 17 years on the Plainview Production Credit Association which merged with Amarillo PCA and was employed as a loan officer for them for 14 years. He was chairman of the board for Hi-Plains Hospital. He was a member of the Hale Center Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife Barbara Stokes of Hale Center; 1 son Steve and his wife, Vicki Stokes of Plainview, 1 daughter, Karoline and her husband Kurt Ashmore of Wellington. 1 brother, Frank Stokes of Carrollton and 4 grandchildren. He is preceded by a grandson, Chris Stokes in 1994 and a brother Johnny Stokes.
