Services for Max Kennedy, 91, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, November 17, 2023, in the Abernathy First Baptist Church with Rev. Mike O'Donnell officiating.  Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy. The family will gather at Abell Funeral Home, Thursday, November 16, 2023 from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm.  They will also gather at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall following services to receive friends. Coach Kennedy died Saturday, November 11, 2023 in San Angelo, TX. Malcolm L. "Max" Kennedy, was born October 7, 1932 in Hobart, OK to Elsie and Selma (Flowers) Kennedy.  He was raised in Memphis, TX and attended schools in Memphis. He graduated Memphis High School in 1950 and then attended West Texas State University, graduating with his Bachelors in Education and later went on to earn his Masters. Max enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Panama.  He began his coaching career in Adrian, TX, and coached in Bovina, TX, Pecos, TX, Lubbock High in Lubbock, TX, Matador, TX. The family then moved to Abernathy in 1969. He then went on to coach at Spur, TX, back to Abernathy where he helped start the Abernathy Elementary P. E. Program.  He retired from coaching from Hale Center ISD.  He was a member of the Texas High School Coaches Assoc and was a longtime member of the Abernathy First Baptist Church. Coach Kennedy was preceded in death by a son, Randy Wane Kennedy in 1972 and his wife, Ernestine Kennedy in 2013 a brother, Harvey Kennedy and a sister, Della Jo Byars. He is survived by his son, David Kennedy and fiancé Erlinda Booe  of Abilene, TX, 3 grandchildren and their mom, Randy Wayne Kennedy of Lubbock,  David Ryan Kennedy of Midland, TX and Elizabeth Renea Kennedy Perez and husband Tres of Ozona, TX, and their mom, Rita Williford-Kennedy of Lubbock, TX and 3 great grandchildren, Thomas, Jaxson and Romen Perez all of Ozona.
