Graveside services for Wayne "Blackie" Attebury, 92, of Lubbock, TX, will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, July 7, 2023, at the Strip Pearce Chapel Cemetery, Abernathy, with Rev. James Taylor, with Redbud Baptist Church, Lubbock, officiating. The family will gather to receive friends from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Abell Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy. Mr. Attebury died Monday, July 3, 2023, at his home in Lubbock. He was born December 11, 1930 in Lubbock County to Ernest Harold "Rocky" and Ruby (Exendine) Attebury. Blackie was raised in the Abernathy area and graduated from New Deal High School in 1948. He married Joan Henry, June 10, 1960 in Hereford, TX. He loved music and played bluegrass on guitar with friends and family. Blackie could build anything he set his mind to. He was a good christian man and one of the kindest people you would meet. Blackie was a coast to coast truck driver in his earlier years. He was a farmer and rancher for most of his life. He was a member of Redbud Baptist Church where he was a greeter. Mr. Attebury is preceded in death by brothers, Edward Attebury and Buck Attebury and sisters-in-law, Mary Attebury and Liz Attebury. He is survived by his wife Joan Attebury of Lubbock, 2 children, Kelly Attebury and wife Gay and Lezlie Henson all of Lubbock. Blackie is also survived by grandchildren, Robyn Ellis and husband Jimmy, Shawn Anderson and wife LeAnna, Taylor Attebury and wife Kathy and Amy Vile Junod and husband Bill, and great grandchildren, Aiden Anderson, Rocket Vile Junod, Presley Vile Junod, Harvey Ellis, Maeve Ellis, Mathias Anderson and Louise Attebury, brothers Wade Attebury and wife Alice and Pat Attebury all of Abernathy and a sister, Nadine Attebury of Lubbock. The family suggests memorials be made to Lubbock Meals on Wheels, 2304 34th Street, Lubbock, TX 79411.
