Obituary of Donna Powell

Memorial services for Donna Shadden Powell, 77, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 11:00am, Friday, February 26, 2016, in the Abernathy First United Methodist Church with Rev. Janet Edwards officiating. The family will gather to receive friends from 6:00-7:00pm on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Abell Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mrs. Powell died Tuesday, February 23, 2016 in Lubbock, TX. She was born October 18, 1938 to Otey "Runt" and Frona Mae (Land) Shadden in Lubbock, TX. Mrs. Powell attended school in Cotton Center, TX, graduating in 1957. She moved to Abernathy in 1958, attended beauty school, and married Dale Powell on August 6, 1960 in Abernathy. She retired as a beautician in Abernathy after 50 years of service, the Powell's then opened up Triple P Convenience Store where she cooked and served "Donna's Chicken". Over the years, she worked to ensure that the same opportunities were provided to the youth of Abernathy that were available to those in larger cities like dance, cheerleading, beauty pageants and twirling. Mrs. Powell learned to love and enjoy anything that her grandkids were involved in and loved any kid that was participating in those activities. She also had the reputation as a Professional Bingo player! She was preceded in death by two brothers Donald Lynn Shadden and James Allen Shadden. Donna is survived by her husband, Dale Powell, of Abernathy, 3 sons Rusty Powell and wife, Lori, of Shallowater, TX, Ricky Powell and wife, Julie, of Abernathy, and Rowdy Powell of Lubbock, a daughter ReGina Wise of Abernathy, 7 grandchildren Ty Wise, Bryant, Jace, and Emmy Powell, Bailey Allen and Rusty Shea Powell, and Huy Daang of Vietnam, a sister, Catherine Crabtree of Abernathy, and her twin brother, Otey Ray Shadden of Cotton Center. The family suggests memorials be made to the Joe Arrington Cancer Center, 4101 22nd Place, Lubbock, TX 79410.
