Services for Erma May Spruiell, 91, of Abernathy, TX, were held at 10:00 am Saturday, January 2, 2010, in the First Church of the Nazarene, Abernathy, TX, with Rev. Mike Davis and Rev. Larry Bloskas officiating. Burial followed in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX.
Mrs. Spruiell died at her home, Tuesday, December 29, 2009.
She was born October 10, 1918 in Wellington, TX to Rufus Caldwell and Eula Estelle (Rhodes) Patterson. Her family moved to Abernathy from Wellington in a covered wagon when Erma May was 3 months old. She graduated fro Abernathy High School and went on to marry Louis LaFayette Spruiell on November 30, 1939 in Abernathy, TX, he preceded her in death on October 2, 1991. She helped her husband in all aspects of their farming, she was an oil painter, she enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, she was a seamstress and loved cooking and canning. She played the piano and accordion and wrote music as well. First and foremost, she was a Christian, she was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene where she was involved in the Children's Ministry, music and missions programs. During hard times, when money was scarce, she baked wedding and special occasion cakes and donated the money to the church missions. She was a devoted Christian woman.
She is survived by 3 daughters, Peggy Spruiell of Plainview, TX and formerly of Abernathy, TX, Joyce Richter of Basehor, KS and Beverly Roberts of Maumelle, Ark, a brother, Vester Patterson of Arlington, TX and 2 sisters, Lorene Wright of Wichita, KS and Alma Ruth Schaap of Abernathy, TX. She is survived by her 4 precious grandchildren, Heather Sheelsey of Maumelle, Ark, Eric Richter and Kevin Richter both of Olathe, KS and Lori Hansen of St. Mary's GA, and her 7 great grandchildren, Jacqueline, Paul and Jackson Sheesley, Tristan and Ean Richter and Ryker and Lena Hansen.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, First Church of the Nazarene, c/o Linda Gonzales, 511 Ave. E, Abernathy, TX 79311.
