Services for Drue Wesley (D.W.) Harkins, 73, of Hale Center, TX, were held at 2:00 pm, May 23 , 2003, in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Bob O'Daniel officiating. Graveside services were held at 5:00 pm in the City of Levelland Cemetery with Rev. Gene Meacham officiating. Services were under the direction of Freeman-Abell Funeral Home of Hale Center, TX. Mr. Harkins died Tuesday, May 20, 2003 in Plainview, TX. He was born November 24, 1929 at Winters,TX. He grew up in Levelland, TX, where his father farmed. After graduation he attended Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, TX on a basketball scholarship. It was there he met and later married Laura Parker. They move to El Paso, TX and he played basketball for UTEP. He earned All-American honors in the college basketball Conference. He later became a basketball coach at Whitharral, Levelland, Claude and Denver City, TX. In 1973, the family moved to Dimmitt, TX where he began a career as a high school principal. In 1980, he became the Middle School principal at Hale Center,TX, where he retired. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Laura Harkins of Hale Center, TX. 2 sons, Dee Harkins and his wife Laurie of Odessa, TX and Cody Harkins and his wife, Shellie of Midland, TX. 1 sister, Mae Burns and her husband, Lloyd of Broken Bow, OK, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Fay, a grandson, Justin Harkins and his son Jerry Harkins. Mr. Harkins was an out-going friendly man admired by friends and greatly loved by all his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed. Abell Funeral Home
