Services for A.W. "Bub" Hammitt were held 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 2, 2009, in the First Baptist Church in Hale Center with Dr. Carrol Green and Dr. Gene Meacham officiating. Burial followed in the Plainview Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home in Hale Center. "Bub" Hammit passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009, in Amarillo, TX. He was born January 29,1925 in Stamford TX, and moved to Hale Center in 1928 with his parents, Metta and Gene Hammit and brother Kenneth Hammit, who have all preceded him in death. Bub was married to Mildred Rieff on January 4, 1948 in Cotton Center, TX. After a short time partnering with his Dad in the grocery business, he farmed in the Hale Center community for many years. A WWII veteran, he joined the Navy at 17 in 1942, and was a Pharmacists Mate stationed in the Admiralty Islands near Papau New Guinea. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hale Center, serving as a deacon for many years. He is survived by his wife Mildred of Hale Center, TX, his daughter and son-in-law Sue and Eddie Turner of Plainview, TX, his son and daughter-in-law Pat and Larry Hammit of Canyon, TX, four grandchildren , Ryan Hammit of Lubbock, TX, Lorrie Hammit of Canyon, TX, Erin West and husband Damon of Lubbock, TX, and Andi Turner of Lubbock, TX, and two great grand children, Cayden and Avery West. Family and friends were invited to join in a visitation which was held at Abell Funeral Home in Hale Center, from 6pm-7:30pm, Monday evening.
