Obituary of Joan Douglas
Please share a memory of Joan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joan Roberson Douglas,81, of Lubbock, TX, known by her family and close friends as "Jodie", died peacefully on February 17, 2007 in Lubbock, Texas following a brief illness.
Joan was born on April 5, 1925 in Petersburg, Texas. She was the 1948 South Plains Maid of Cotton. She married her beloved late husband, Jack Douglas, on January 7, 1950 and together they owned and operated AAA Insurance Underwriters in Lubbock, an insurance agency that has been operated by her daughter D'Ann for the past several years. The interests and passions she enjoyed in her life are too numerous to list in full, but included her family, gardening and playing bridge. Words alone could never capture her love of cooking, and it was not unusual for her to sit and read cookbooks for pleasure, as another might a good novel. She could light up a room with her radiant smile and timeless beauty. Her pleasant demeanor and sheer elegance are among the many wonderful characteristics for which she will forever be fondly and lovingly remembered.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Douglas, who passed away on November 26, 1974, her father, Hershel Hubert Roberson, and her mother, Willie "Wink" Shankle Roberson. The youngest of five children, she was also preceded in death by her three brothers (Lloyd, Kenneth and Homer) and her sister (Gladys).
Joan is survived by her daughter, D'Ann Douglas of Lubbock, and two sons, Jack Douglas of Costa Mesa, California, and his wife Cindy and their three children Jared, Whitney and Chris; and Brad Douglas of Austin, and his wife Karen and their son Chris, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The world has lost a silent but truly great hero who epitomized the "Greatest Generation". She was strong in faith, large in love, completely reliable, honest and hard working. She gave of herself selflessly to her children and set an example that only a few in life attain. She will be missed, remembered and loved forever by all who knew her.
Memorial services were held at 1:00 pm Friday, February 23, 2007, in St. Paul's Historic Church, located in Clapp Park at 40th & University, in Lubbock, TX. Burial followed in the Petersburg Cemetery in Petersburg, Texas under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy, TX.
Thank you, Mom, for the honor and pleasure of being able to walk beside you all these years.
