Services for Josie Mae Hood, 88, of Oklahoma City, OK and formerly of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 10:00 am Monday, July 7, 2025 at Abernathy United Church with Rev. Dave Menefee officiating. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy. Viewing will be held from 3:00pm until 6:00pm, Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Abell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Josie Hood passed away peacefully on Monday, June 30, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Oklahoma City.
Josie was born on May 10, 1937, in Corsicana, Texas, to Jack and Francis (Cravin) Cooper. She was raised in Corsicana before eventually settling in Abernathy, where she met and married the love of her life, Cleopha “Cleo” Hood, in 1952. Together, they built a loving home and raised their family in Abernathy.
A woman of deep faith, Josie was a longtime and faithful member of the First Church of the Nazarene, where she served joyfully on the hospitality committee. Her life was rooted in service, whether at church, in her community, or at work. She was employed in the Abernathy ISD School Cafeteria for 27 years, where she greeted generations of students with kindness and a warm smile.
Josie’s true calling was caring for others. Her mission in life was to serve, and through that mission, she welcomed many into her home and heart, extending her love and family far beyond bloodlines.
She will be remembered for her compassion, her unwavering faith, and the countless lives she touched with her generosity and open arms.
Josie was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Hood, 3 sons, Cleo Hood, Jr, Randy Hood, and Ricky Hood, 2 daughters, Kathy Hood and Freda Norris, and a granddaughter, Lena Ann Hood. Josie was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Chester Cooper and JM Cooper and 1 sister, Joyce Mason.
She is survived by 1 son, Mickel Hood of Abernathy, 2 daughters, Virginia Hood of Abernathy and Anita Wilson of Oklahoma City, OK, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings, Johnnie Marie Johnson, Tim Cooper, Gloria Johnson, Roy Cravin, Robert Cravin, Freddy Cravin, Bobby Cravin all of Lubbock, TX and a sister, Mary Helen Johnson of Virginia.
