Obituary of Robert Lynn Priest

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert Lynn Priest, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, educator, coach, and friend. Robert passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025 at the age of 82. Born on October 22, 1942, in Santa Anna, TX, Robert was the son of Weldon Elmo and Emma Oleta (Penny) Priest. He grew up with a strong sense of responsibility and compassion that would define his character. A 1961 graduate of Olton High School, Olton, TX, Robert earned the nickname “The Tank” for his strength and skill on the football field—an early sign of the quiet determination and leadership that would mark his life. On September 1, 1962, Robert married the love of his life, Nancy Lee Bryant, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, faith, and unwavering support. He went on to graduate from West Texas State College with a degree in teaching and coaching, dedicating his life to shaping the minds and hearts of young people. Robert began his coaching career in Ralls, TX with Luke Nickerson and Lane Tannehill. He later coached in Plainview, TX and Hereford, TX and was known for his integrity, wisdom, and dedication. In 1982, he became a school administrator in Hereford and was named High School Principal in 1984 in Abernathy, where he served until his retirement in 2001. Whether in the office, classroom or on the field, he was a respected mentor who believed in the potential of every student. After retiring, Robert and Nancy loved traveling with her cousin and husband and her brother and sister-in-law. Together they attended many gospel music shows in a variety of venues. He was a talented musician himself in his earlier days going to UIL Regional competitions with his baritone. Robert loved all sports, especially football, basketball, tennis, and ping pong. He had other interests that occupied his time off the field or court—he was a motorcycle enthusiast, a HAM radio operator, a skilled photographer, and a talented woodworker and home remodeler. He had a mechanical mind and a craftsman’s hands, always building, fixing, or improving something. He even built a TV from a kit. He loved spending time in his barn with his sons and the grandkids passing along some of these talents as well as treasured life lessons to them. He truly never met a stranger—Robert had a gift for conversation and connection, always making people feel welcomed, accepted and valued. Robert was preceded in death by both of his parents, his twin brother, Larry Glynn, his older brother, Jim Priest and wife, Betty and one nephew, Mark Priest. Robert’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Nancy, and their two sons, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one brother. Oldest son, Tony Lynn Priest and wife, Andrea reside in Crane, TX. Kelly Glenn Priest and wife, Barbie, reside in Abernathy, TX. Robert’s three grandsons include Robert Edward Priest and wife, Alba, and great grandson Robert Edward of Midland, TX; Alex Lynn Priest and wife, Dede, of Brockport, NY; and Chandler Glenn Priest and wife, Danielle of Midland, TX; and great grandsons, Carson Glenn and Dylan Lee of Midland. Granddaughters include Alyssa Priest of Odessa, TX; Tara Priest of Midland; and Jenna Priest of Odessa. Robert is survived by one brother, Dr. Joe Priest and wife, Susan, of Stephenville, TX; his lifelong cousin, Bob Penny and wife Nancy, along with many other extended family members and treasured friends. His legacy lives on through each of them—in the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the example he set. The family would like to thank the staff at the Bee Hive and Hospice of the South Plains for the loving care they provided to Robert in his final years. The family will receive guests and visitors on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, from 6:00 pm until 7:30 p.m. at Abell Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating Robert’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 28th at First Baptist Church of Abernathy at 1 p.m. Cremation Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. The family kindly requests donations be made in Robert’s memory to Abernathy Ex Students Association, PO Box 1, Abernathy, TX 79311, honoring his lifelong dedication to service and community or a charity of your choice. Robert Lynn Priest lived a life of purpose, compassion, and quiet strength. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the hearts and lives of all who were blessed to know him.
