Obituary of Ruby "Jewel" Blakes

Services for Ruby Blakes, 85, of Lubbock, TX and formerly Abernathy, TX, will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, April 5, 2025, in the First Church of the Nazarene in Dodson, TX with Rev. Dave Menefee, Rev. Kevin Harris and Rev. Caleb Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in the Dodson Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Wellington, TX. Local arrangements are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy. The family will receive friends at Abell Funeral Home in Abernathy, from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm, Friday, April 4, 2025. Mrs. Blakes died Friday, March 28, 2025 at her daughters home in Lubbock. Ruby was born on April 27, 1939, in Wellington, TX, to Ed and Marie (Wright) Sango. She married Clemon Blakes on October 25, 1952 in Hollis, OK. Ruby’s passion for cooking led her to a long and fulfilling career at the Abernathy ISD school cafeteria, where she dedicated many years of her life to serving others. In her free time, she found joy in camping and exploring the beauty of the lake. Ruby was a devoted member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Abernathy, where she actively taught children’s Sunday School and served in the church’s nursery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clemon Blakes and son, Clemon Blakes, Jr., and sister Nellie Sue Little. She is survived by 3 children, Dale Blakes of Lubbock, TX, Lonnie Blakes and wife Connie, of Abernathy and Barbara Shorter of Lubbock. Ruby is survived by 5 grandchildren, Michelle Plasencio and husband Ernest, Craig Blakes, Chris Shorter, Kianna Blakes and Matthew Shorter, 12 great grandchildren, Veronica Meier and husband Fabian Carmona, Bobby Joe Rivera, Michaela Rivera and husband Gabriel Flores, Mya Jimenez, Jacob Jimenez, Jason Jimenez, Breanna Shorter, Brenden Elliott, L. J. Minjarez, Leandra Minjarez, Jolisa Plasencio and Elizabeth Plasencio, 5 great great grandchildren with one on the way, 7 sisters, Dorothy Blakes, Janie Fuller, Mary Crawford, Margaret Dennis and husband Glenn Rhodes, Edna Jackson, Alene Sango and Glendine Murrell and Husband Jerry, daughter-in-law, Sandra Blakes and numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be sent to the First Church of the Nazarene, 501 Ave. E, Abernathy, TX 79311 or to UMC Hospice, 4408 6th Street, Ste 200, Lubbock, TX 79416
