Obituary of Patsy Mills Baker

Graveside services for Patsy Mills Baker, 88, of Idalou, TX, will be held at 1:00pm, Thursday, February 6, 2025 in the Abernathy Cemetery with Rev. Janet Edwards officiating. The family will gather to receive friends from 6:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, at Abell Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mrs. Baker died on Saturday, February 1, 2025 in Idalou. She was born on January 18, 1937 to J.C. and Frances (Thompson) Mills in Munday, TX. Mrs. Baker moved with her family to Odessa, TX and later moved to Abernathy when she was 5 years old. She graduated from Abernathy High School in 1955. During her high school years, she was the Football Sweetheart in 1951 and the Future Farmers of America Sweetheart in 1954. Mrs. Baker also served as the South Plains Stock Show Princess and was awarded a Future Homemakers of America State Degree. She was also a band majorette, played basketball, and was a Who's Who Best Citizen. Following her high school graduation, Mrs. Baker went on to McMurry College in Abilene, TX from 1955-1958, earning a Bachelor's degree. While at McMurry, she was a member of the T.I.P. Social Club, serving as the secretary, an Indian Band Majorette in 1955. She was also selected as Totem Beauty in 1956, 1957, and 1958. She married Robert Baker on August 5, 1956 in Abernathy, TX and they moved to Bowie, TX in 1958. She taught Language Arts and coached girls basketball. In December 1962, Robert & Patsy moved to Idalou. Mrs. Baker taught Special Education from 1982-1989, and then became the Transition Coordinator for EPEC from 1989 until her retirement in 2002. Mrs. Baker was a member of the Methodist Church where she served on the SPRC and Parsonage Committees. She also taught the Adult Sunday School Class and volunteered with the Food Voucher Program. Mrs. Baker was a Former Corresponding Secretary for the Lubbock Women's Club. She enjoyed reading, traveling with friends, playing Bridge, as well as baking and entertaining for family and friends. Mrs. Baker was also a constant at the activities of her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Baker (November 12, 2020), sister Shirley Coxon and brother Jim Mills. Mrs. Baker is survived by her children Clay Baker of Dallas, TX, Lori Houston and husband, Rick, of Abernathy, granchildren Bailey Wade and husband, Bryce, of Ada, OK and Luke Houston of Abernathy, great grandson, Boone Wade of Ada, OK, sister-in-law Frankie Mills of Lubbock, 2 nephews Kelly Mills and wife, Julie, of Lubbock, and Stacy Mills and wife, Tia, of Capitan, NM, one niece, Jenna Wolcott and husband, Randy, of Lubbock, and one aunt Bille Fern Motheral of Kress, TX. The family suggests memorials be made to the Idalou Methodist Church "Lord's Acre Fund", 518 Chestnut St., Idalou, TX 79329, the Abernathy Cemetery Association, PO Box 150, Abernathy, TX 79311, or the South Plains Food Bank, 5605 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lubbock, TX 79404.
