Services for Wayne A. "Corky" Covey, 93, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 25, 2022, in the Abernathy Church of Christ with Smith Wayne Covey, officiating. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. The family will gather to receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. , Monday, January 24th at Abell Funeral Home.
Mr. Covey died Saturday, January 22, 2022, in Lubbock, TX.
He was born May 29, 1928 in Arlie, TX (Childress County) to Lilbern Garfield and Faye Alice (Wisdom) Covey. Corky was the youngest of 6 children. He graduated New Deal High School and married Rola B. Smith January 7, 1949 in Abernathy. They lived in Lubbock and New Deal before settling in Abernathy in the early 1950's. He was a member of the Church of Christ and had served as Deacon at New Deal Church of Christ and as Elder at both New Deal and Abernathy Churches of Christ. Corky was involved in the beginning plannings of the White River Youth Camp. He farmed in the New Deal and Abernathy areas and was an avid basketball and football fan.
Mr. Covey was preceded in death by his wife, Rola B Covey, November 13, 2003 and 2 sons, Oscar Allen Covey, January 27, 1955 and Noe Jeff Covey, February 19, 1968. Following the death of his wife, Rola B, Corky married Sue Baugh in Dec of 2005, and she preceded him in death, May of 2017.
He is survived by a son, Smith Wayne Covey and wife Louise of Bastrop, TX, 2 daughters, Rickie Vasek of Abernathy and Tina McNeill and husband Walter of Happy, TX, 6 grandchildren, LeAnn McCusker and husband Bobby, Turner Wayne Covey and wife Carley, Tamber Mills and husband Tanner, Koby Vasek and wife Lindsey, Blake Allen McNeill and wife Rebekah and Kelsea Denman and husband Drew, 13 great grandchildren and one on the way.
